I used to think a jersey only came out on game day. Wore mine to maybe four Cubs games a year and it sat folded in a drawer the rest of the time, which is kind of a waste when you think about it. Then a friend of mine showed up to brunch wearing hers with jeans, no ballcap, no fanfare, and it just worked. Looked like an outfit, not a costume.
Turns out you don’t need much of a plan here. A jersey plus the right basics, and it reads as clothes you chose, not sportswear you forgot to take off.
Here’s what’s actually worked for me, and for people I’ve stolen ideas from.
1. Jeans, Because They’re Easy
This is the low-effort option and it’s still my most-used one. Blue jeans, black jeans, even the beat-up faded pair from college, all of them work.
I wear my Cubs jersey with straight-leg jeans and white sneakers most weekends. Left open over a plain tee, it feels casual. Buttoned all the way, it looks a little more put together, good for a nicer lunch or whatever.
Skip the extra jewelry or layers on top. The jersey’s already doing the visual work, don’t compete with it.
2. Shorts When It’s Actually Warm Out
Summer changes things. Denim shorts, plain cotton ones, even athletic shorts if you’re headed somewhere active, any of it pairs fine.
Open jersey, plain white or black tee underneath, sneakers, done. That’s my go-to for a farmers market trip or just sitting outside somewhere.
One thing worth knowing: if your jersey’s already loud, red and blue, big logo, don’t fight it with equally loud shorts. Neutral colors on the bottom half let the jersey be the statement piece instead of turning the whole outfit into visual noise.
3. Layer It Over a Plain Tee
This one’s underrated. A basic tee underneath takes the “sports uniform” feeling off the jersey and makes it feel more like a jacket you’re layering, not a costume piece.
White or black tees work best here, mostly because they don’t distract from the jersey’s colors. Open with jeans is my usual move. Buttoned up if I want something slightly neater for later in the day.

4. A Cap If You Want to Lean Into It
Some days I want the sports look a bit stronger, not less. That’s when a cap comes in.
A Chicago Cubs cap next to the jersey doesn’t feel like overkill, it feels intentional, like you actually meant to dress this way instead of just grabbing whatever was clean. Keep everything else basic though, jeans or shorts, sneakers, nothing fancy.
If you’re trying to put together a full Cubs look from scratch, Sports World Chicago has a decent range of Chicago Cubs jerseys and other gear that’s easy to mix without a ton of guesswork.
5. Joggers for the Days You Just Want Comfort
Some days I don’t want jeans touching my legs. Joggers solve that, and honestly they match a jersey’s loose, relaxed shape better than you’d expect.
Neutral joggers, plain tee, clean sneakers, and a Cubs jersey layered open on top, that’s basically my travel-day outfit at this point. Works for running errands too, or just a low-key day where nobody’s judging your fit.
A Few Things Worth Remembering
Nothing complicated here, just some stuff I’ve learned by trial and error:
- Comfort first, always. If it’s annoying to wear, you won’t wear it again
- Let the jersey stay the focal point, don’t bury it under accessories
- Neutral bottoms if the jersey’s already bold
- Sneakers, basically every time, they’re the safest call
- A cap if you want the sports feel turned up a notch
There’s no perfect combination waiting to be discovered. Just whatever actually feels like you when you put it on.
Why This Even Works
Jerseys have this relaxed, boxy shape that somehow makes them easy to build around, and the design’s recognizable enough that people know what it is without you explaining. You get to show team pride without dressing head to toe like you’re headed to the dugout.
For a lot of fans, a Chicago Cubs jersey isn’t really about baseball at all, at least not entirely. Mine reminds me of a specific game with my dad, way back: extra innings, we almost left early and didn’t. That kind of memory sticks to a piece of clothing whether you plan for it or not.
That’s probably how jerseys ended up wandering out of stadiums and into regular closets everywhere. Not a trend exactly, just people realizing the thing they already owned could do more than sit in a drawer.

Bottom Line: Stop Saving It for Game Day Only
Your jersey doesn’t need a scoreboard nearby to earn a spot in your outfit rotation.
Jeans on a normal day. Shorts once it’s warm. Layer it if you want texture. Cap it if you want the full look. Joggers if comfort’s winning today. None of these are wrong, they’re just different moods.
Pull it out of the drawer. Wear it on a random Tuesday if you want. That’s kind of the whole point.
